How to Pick the Right Sale; Percentage Off vs Freebies

When selecting a promotion for your company there's two main options you have to pick from;

1. A percentage off

And

2. Something "Free"

A percentage off can be a good promotion; "50% off", "25% off" etc, but you have to rely on your customers to be able to figure out what the percentage is. The problem is that the average American population doesn't know math, so when you say 25% off they either think "Wow! That's great" or "That's IT?!"; the first reaction can really work to your advantage whereas the second reaction equals no sales.

The only way a "percentage off" sale really works is when you use numbers 50% or greater. Customers are used to seeing places like Macys do "75% off Sales" so they know the savings is big. It also helps to create signs that show dollar amounts and the "new price";" Was $10, NOW IS $2.50".

Or there's the "free" option such as "Buy 1 Get 1 Free" or "Buy 1 Get ___ Free". I have found these sales to be far more beneficial because everyone knows what "Free" means: there's no math involved. What they don't realize is that "Buy 1 Get 1 Free" is the same as 50% off...

ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW:

So if your goal is to do 50% off, try a B1G1 sale. If you want 75% off, try a Buy 1 Get 3 Sale. You'd be amazed at the difference in sales!
