How to Make Cost Effective Retail Store Displays (Yard Sale, Fundraiser)

If you're looking for a quick and easy way to get displays for your store, yard sale, fundraiser, etc; don't spend a fortune! You can make nice-looking, temporary displays for a few dollars.

These displays are especially wonderful for holding small items or odd shaped items such as little perfumes, nail polishes, mascara's etc.

Here's a step by step guide to making cost effective, money saving displays:

SUPPLIES NEEDED:
1 Piece of Styrofoam. I like the kind used to make floral arrangements. You can get this from the Dollar Tree (dollar store) or any craft store. A single piece shouldn't cost over $2.00.

Spray Paint in Desired Color. If you don't have spray paint you can use acrylic paint or even wrap the display in material.

(Optional) Glitter. I like using glitter on my displays because it makes it stand out.

(Optional) Hair Spray. I use hair spray to seal the glitter onto the display. You can also use a spray sealant or a paint sealant.

DIRECTIONS:
Determine exactly what products you want to have in the display. If you have multiple exact duplicates of a particular item, you may one to place only a few in the display and refill the display as they sell. Or, if you have a lot of the same items in different colors/fragrances, etc, you may want to make a larger display that will accomodate all of them. For example, I have about 60 bottles of purse-size perfume in three different scents...

Victorias Secret Dream Angels Mini Perfumes

I want my display to hold one of each scent so customers can "test" them. To prevent theft, I will keep the remainder of the bottles elsewhere and when a purchase is made I will give them one of the bottles from my stock.

As you can see, the styrofoam comes in blocks that is much larger than what
I need...

How to Make Retail Displays

I took a knife and cut the styrofoam to size.

How to Build a Cheap Display

You want to make sure that your display is large enough to stand out. If you make your display too small it may tip over.

Next, use the items you want placed in your display and make spaces for them by pushing the item into the styrofoam.

Make Easy Displays

Be sure to push the items in deep enough so they stay in place. I like to manuver the item slowly back and forth just a tad to make the space in the diplay just a hair larger than the item. This makes it easier for the customer to take the items out. You don't want customers to have to jam the goods back into the styrofoam and ruin your display.

Next, take your display outdoors and give it a good coat of spray paint. Since the styrofoam is porous it will need to be "drenched" in paint. If you apply only a thin layer it will be absorbed into the foam. Just coat it really well.

Affordable Store Displays

While the display is wet with paint, you can put the glitter onto it. Simply sprinkle glitter directly onto the display. You can use as much or as little as you'd like.

Simple Yard Sale

Once the display has partially dried, give it a good coating of hairspray. This holds the glitter to the display and also seals the paint so it doesnt chip or flake.

Make Fundraiser Display

After the display has fully dried, apply another coat of hairspray.

Now you have a cost effective, easy to use display that holds your products, looks nice and you won't be upset if it gets damaged because you didn't spend lots of money on it!
